RMIT Publishing seeks to minimise embargo periods. Embargos are subject to partner and publisher agreements and can vary. The vast majority of content has a maximum embargo of 2 months.

RMIT Pubilshing offers five different authentication methods when subscribing to the Informit service.
Username and Password

Users must type their username and password in the boxes provided and click on Login.
IP Authentication
Provide your IP address ranges to RMIT Publishing to enter into Informit Admin.
Go to: http://search.informit.com.au
Users will automatically be logged into Informit; as long as your computer's IP address is part of the range provided.
Referring URL Authentication
Provide a referring URL to RMIT Publishing to enter into Informit Admin.

Users will automatically be logged into Informit; as long as they link from the referring page provided.
Embedded Username and Password

Where XXXXX and YYYYY are the Informit username and password for your organisation.

Barcode Authentication
Barcode authentication allows remote users of small libraries to access Informit by using their library card barcode or member number details.
Provide RMIT Publishing your barcode ranges which are unique to your organisation, along with a referring URL.
You can link to any Informit Search page from your webpage as long as it ends with barcode=true;org=XXXXX
Concurrency Limit
Concurrency limits are based on the institute's subscription to databases.

Ways to search Informit
- Basic searching allows the user to do a keyword or phrase search or to easily construct complex searches using drop-down lists to indexes of important fields (Title, Author, Subject, Abstract, Journal Title, ISSN, etc.).
- Advanced searching is available using the ISO 8777 compliant Informit Query Language and the option to search in any field.
- Full text Publication browsing is available for Informit e-Library Collections and Plus Text databases providing a user-friendly and intuitive way to locate articles and publications. Browsable pages available: Publication Title, Table of Contents (e-books, conference proceedings), List of Issues (journals). Additionally, Document Summary pages are available for all complete item Titles (e.g. books, reports) and component item Titles (e.g. journal articles, book chapters) listing Title, Authors, Subjects, ISSN/ISBN, Abstract, Document Type, Imprint, Series and the item Citation. Browsing of Titles can also be done via Publication Type, Subject and Publishers. Coverage dates of journals are provided. Full text Publication browsing is associated with fully searchable index database(s) and you can switch easily between Publication browsing and searching the associated index database. Similar full content browsing functions and associated index database searching are available for Informit Media databases.

- Single term searching using links: Click any listed index term to find records listing the term
- Multiple term searching: Select multiple terms via check boxes to find records listing terms
Links within records are available for all important Author, Subject, ISBN, ISSN, Journal Title and other host title fields.
Indexing
Informit e-Library Collections
Indexed in-house by Informit: to international standards with abstracts, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Identifiers.
Informit Plus Text databases
Indexed by third party hosted content providers, each with its’ own controlled vocabulary thesaurus (e.g. MeSH), Identifiers and indexing policies. Additional subject fields are available in many databases, e.g. ‘Personal Name as Subject’, etc.
All other databases are either indexed in-house or by third party hosted content providers and have either a thesaurus, controlled subject list or subject keywords.
International Standard Book Number (ISBN) or International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is provided for items in most databases.
Cross Database Search
Cross-database searching is supported via the native interface and via z39.50.
Web Search
Informit provides a native web based searching interface.
Saved Searches
Users are able to save and re-load search histories.
