Indexing

Each database is indexed with controlled and uncontrolled index terms. Controlled terms and classification codes are derived from each database's subject-specific thesaurus.

Cross Database Search

Users can search all the subscribed databases or any combination of subscribed databases simultaneously, and remove duplicates at the search results page. Users can select the database from which duplicated records are taken.

Web Search

Engineering Village supports web search of Scirus, EEVL, and LexisNexis News. Links to IHS Standards, GlobalSpec, and CRC EngnetBASE are also provided.

Saved Searches

Users can save up to 125 searches. Saved searches are accessed via hyperlinks in users' "My Profile" section and can be executed or removed from the profile at any time.

Search Tips

A detailed "how-to" guide for searching is provided in the Help file, and via other online training materials available at www.ei.org.

The Quick Search and Expert Search screens include a search tips box, which specifically describes wildcard, truncation, stemming and proximity searching.

Search Results

Features

  • Deduplication
  • Include Abstracts
  • OpenURL linking

Notes

On the search results page, users can:

  • Set up email alerts
  • Create RSS feeds
  • Save searches
  • Email records
  • Print records

  • View results in Citations, Abstract and Detailed formats
  • Faceted search results are presented, structured around key data elements, such as controlled vocabulary, database name, author name, author affiliation, country of author affiliation, document type, year of publication, language, publisher name, source title. Results can be refined by including or excluding data elements, or combining data elements.
  • Faceted search results can be visualized in a chart to provide insight into distribution of results data, and data can be exported for viewing or analysis in an external application, such as Excel.

Ordering

Results can be sorted by relevancy, date, author name, source, and publisher on the search results page.

Exporting

  • Endnote
  • RefWork

Other Functionality

Citation Linking

There is no citation linking for A&I content.

Citation linking or citation searching is available for Ei Patents. Users can search backward and forward through citations and link to both patent and non-patent references.

Full Text Linking

Full text linking is supported via CrossRef using DOIs. Only citation, abstract and detailed level records with a verified DOI associated with them will show a link to the electronic full text. Linking to local holdings is supported, as is linking via OpenURL compliant link resolvers such as Endeavor LinkFinder Plus, Ex Libris SFX, Serials Solutions Article Linker, or Innovative Interfaces Web Bridge.

Interface Customisation

Customers can add logos and link to library OPACs

Subscribers of Engineering Village have many customization options from which to choose.

Ask an Expert
Your library can have Ask a Librarian questions sent to local reference staff instead of to Ei librarians. This option facilitates communication between local reference staff and the end-user via Engineering Village. Customers who prefer that the Ask an Expert tab be removed completely can have this done as well.

Autostemming in Quick Search
Customers can request this default to be on or off.

Default Database
Customers can choose which database or combinations of databases to have as a default search page.

Default Home Page
Customers can choose Easy Search, Quick Search, Expert Search, eBook Search or Thesaurus as the default search page.

Default Sorting
Customers can have Ei set their pre-search default to Date or Relevance.

Document Delivery
Ei can display links to a preferred document delivery service or to Linda Hall Library and/or CISTI at the Abstract or Detailed Record level.

Links to full text can be displayed at the citation, abstract and detailed record level. This feature can be disabled by request.

Limit by Year Default
Customers can set their default beginning search year to the earliest supported in the subscribed database(s).

Linking Options (external)
Customers can provide text or graphical Local Holdings, Document Delivery, or OpenURL (LinkFinder Plus, SFX, etc.) links to Ei for deployment at citation, abstract and detailed views.

Alerting

Users can create email and RSS alerts. Alerts are sent once a week and enable the user to link directly to the record in Engineering Village.

Other

Personalization Features
Personal accounts let users create folders to save searches and records, set up and manage email or RSS alerts, and create groups with which to share records of interest. Setting up a personal account also makes it possible to tag records.

Faceted Search & Faceted Browsing
Using the faceted search (guided navigation), users can analyze content from all the databases searched without any additional tools. This feature enables users to get intelligence and insight from the search results and to find trends in research and discover new relationships.

Record Tagging
Users can tag records with their own keywords for easy retrieval and can search other users' tags to gain perspective on what others in the field are researching. Records can be tagged within Engineering Village, or users can link out to external tagging options (del.icio.us, 2Collab).

Thesaurus
Users can leverage the conceptual indexing being done by engineering experts to find the most relevant results.

Patents Cited Reference Search
Using Ei Patents, users can perform backward and forward citation searches, as well as link to patent and non-patent references. If the non-patent reference is a record on a subscribed Engineering Village database, the user will be able to link to it directly from the patent record. Also, using Ei patents users can analyze trends and see any university's patent output with one search query.

Blog This
Using Engineering Village's "Blog This" feature, users can link from their blogs to a record on Engineering Village to facilitate collaboration.

Highlighting
Search terms are highlighted in abstract and detailed views.

Document Delivery
Customers can define their selected document delivery service, such as Linda Hall, British Library, or CISTI. Users will be directed from the abstract to the preferred document delivery service.

Ask An Expert
Using the Engineering Village platform, users can direct research related questions directly to their university information professionals or to Engineering Information librarians. More subject specific questions can also be sent to a group of engineering professors through the Ask An Engineer feature.
